Traditions around the World
December 14, 2012
Dear Parents,
Hello. We hope that all is well and that you are looking forward to the upcoming Christmas break. It was nice to see many of you at the Holiday Concert. Montessori’s traditions of acceptance of everyone throughout the world still holds true. We hope that you enjoyed hearing the different styles of music for various countries.
We have been busy learning about traditions from around the world for this time of year. Mrs. Herion came in to speak about a Swedish tradition on Thursday. Ask your child to share some of the information that they found interesting during her presentation. On Monday, we will have someone come and share about Hanukkah.
Please start saving your empty toilet paper rolls. We will be making a decoration for the auction and it may even be auctioned off that night.
Please support our Hope project. Our goal is $2,000 and we have reached $300. The children can do jobs around the house and earn extra change to buy candles. You may also like to purchase the cards that 6 to 9 year olds made. They are really cute!
Just a quick reminder that next week is our last full week of school before the holiday with Friday being a ½ day. Remember that there is no after school offered on December 21, 2012. Enjoy your holiday.
Thank you,
Christy

Christmas Around the World
Christmas Around The World
Dear Parents,
An early Happy Holidays to you all! During the next two weeks, we will be learning about how children around the world celebrate winter holidays. For the next few weeks, we will be learning about several countries in class, reading traditional holiday stories from other countries, and discussing the holidays of Kwanzaa and Hanukah.
In addition to our in-class studies, your child may “adopt” (optional) a country. They may research at home how Christmas is celebrated in this country and may do a presentation on Thursday, December 20, 2012.
Ideas:
· Prepare a short, five minute oral presentation on how Christmas is celebrated in that county (traditional decorations, songs, parties, customs, etc.)
· Learn how to say the words “Merry Christmas” in that country’s language and/or bring in a large sign showing the country’s name and these words (e.g., Feliz Navidad for Mexico ).
· Be able to point to the county on the world map.
· Bring in a traditional Christmas dish from that county (homemade or store brought) for the class to share.
· Wear a traditional holiday outfit from that country.
On the half day, Friday, December 21, 2012 we will visit each classroom in the 6-9 building and learn about winter holiday traditions. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Spelling List
Because next week is a short week, November 12-16, 2012, we will not have spelling words. It is our suggestion that our students spend extra time reading independently or to someone else.
Also, if you have not returned your Pre-enrollment forms or field trip permission slips, please do so soon.
Thank you!

Parents,
As we mentioned in our Parent Conferences, we would like to encourage everyone to continuously read at home. We strongly believe that becoming strong readers helps to improve multiple areas of study.
During the week of November 12, 2012, we will be receiving canned goods to be donated to Eagles Wings. Please take the time to speak to your children about "giving back to the community."
Reminder: November 12, 2012 is a holiday and there will be no school.
