Christmas Around the World

Christmas Around The World

Dear Parents,

An early Happy Holidays to you all! During the next two weeks, we will be learning about how children around the world celebrate winter holidays.  For the next few weeks, we will be learning about several countries in class, reading traditional holiday stories from other countries, and discussing the holidays of Kwanzaa and Hanukah.

In addition to our in-class studies, your child may “adopt” (optional) a country.  They may research at home how Christmas is celebrated in this country and may do a presentation on Thursday, December 20, 2012.

Ideas:
·       Prepare a short, five minute oral presentation on how Christmas is celebrated in that county (traditional decorations, songs, parties, customs, etc.)
·       Learn how to say the words “Merry Christmas” in that country’s language and/or bring in a large sign showing the country’s name and these words (e.g., Feliz Navidad for Mexico).
·       Be able to point to the county on the world map.
·       Bring in a traditional Christmas dish from that county (homemade or store brought) for the class to share.
·       Wear a traditional holiday outfit from that country.

On the half day, Friday, December 21, 2012 we will visit each classroom in the 6-9 building and learn about winter holiday traditions.  Please let us know if you have any questions.
